Hook: 14

A soft hackled jig nymph from Curtis at Fly Fish Food, based on the Frenchie and built around Whiting materials. Fibers from Coq De Leon tail feathers make the abdomen in the same way pheasant tail would. A mottled gray Brahma wing feather takes the place of partridge for the soft hackle. The tail comes from a Coq De Leon rooster saddle, and a copper brown wire rib, a pink Ice Dub thorax and a red thread hot spot finish the fly behind a mottled tungsten bead. Tied here on a size 14 hook.

How to Tie the Americanchie

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the mottled tungsten bead onto the hook and mount the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Wrap the .015 lead wire onto the shank behind the bead and push it up against the bead.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Start the red thread behind the lead, cover the wraps and continue back to the bend.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Tie in a small bunch of Coq De Leon fibers at the bend for the tail. Bind the butts and trim any excess.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Tie in the copper brown wire at the bend.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Pull a bunch of fibers from a Coq De Leon tail feather and tie them in at the bend.

Fibers from the upper half of the feather are the stronger ones. Save the lower fibers for tails or wing cases.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Advance the thread forward and coat the underbody with super glue.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Clip rotary hackle pliers to the fibers and wrap them forward to form the abdomen. Tie them off and trim the excess.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Spiral the wire forward over the abdomen in open turns. Tie it off and trim.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Dub the thread with UV shrimp pink Ice Dub and wrap a small thorax just behind the bead, leaving room for the hackle and hot spot.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Pick a Brahma feather sized to the hook and tie it in front of the thorax.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Wrap the feather with hackle pliers so the fibers sweep back over the thorax. Tie it off and trim the excess.

  13. 13

    Step 13

Wrap a neat band of red thread behind the bead for the hot spot. Whip finish and trim.
