AP Emerger Variation
AP Emerger Variation is Clark "Cheech" Pierce's take on the AP, or All Purpose, Emerger, a stillwater pattern from Denny Rickards used on lakes and reservoirs. The original is a large soft hackle with a tail of wood duck, mallard or partridge, a wire-ribbed dubbed body, a peacock thorax and a partridge hackle. This version swaps in buggier hare's ear dubbing and adds a touch of flash in the body and thorax. A large soft hackle like this can pass for anything from a mayfly nymph to a leech. Tied here on a size 8 hook.

How to Tie the AP Emerger Variation
- 1
Step 1
Mount the hook in the vise and start the thread on the shank.
- 2
Step 2
Wrap a section of lead wire around the front half of the shank, leaving room behind the eye. Bind over the lead with the thread, then wrap back to the bend.
- 3
Step 3
Pull a small bunch of fibers from a partridge feather and tie them in at the bend for a tail.
- 4
Step 4
Tie in the purple tinsel at the base of the tail and leave it hanging off the back of the hook.
- 5
Step 5
Dub the thread with snowshoe rabbit foot dubbing and wrap a shaggy body forward, stopping short of the eye to leave room for the thorax and collar.
- 6
Step 6
Wind the tinsel forward through the dubbing in open turns as a rib. Tie it off and trim the excess.
- 7
Step 7
Brush the body so the fibers stand out over the rib.
- 8
Step 8
Dub a small amount of Ice Dub onto the thread and wrap the thorax in front of the body.
- 9
Step 9
Pick out a partridge feather and tie it in by the tip just ahead of the thorax for the soft hackle collar.
- 10
Step 10
Wrap the feather a few turns, tie it off and trim the excess.
Stroke the fibers back toward the bend as you wrap so they sweep over the body.
- 11
Step 11
Build a small thread head, whip finish and cut the thread.
