Hook: 8

Lance Egan's Big Junk is a mid-sized, bugger-style streamer colored the way real sculpins are, with a pale ginger belly under an olive back. He first fished this combination on Utah's Provo River, where sculpins he caught while sampling for bugs were lighter underneath than most imitations. Lead eyes on top of the shank turn the hook point up, while the marabou tail and shaggy dubbed head give it plenty of motion. Fish it on 2X or heavier, alone or as one of two flies on larger rivers. Tied here on a size 8 hook.

How to Tie the Big Junk Streamer

  1. 1

    Step 1

Mount the hook and start the thread on the shank behind the hook eye.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tie the lead eyes on top of the shank, a little back from the hook eye, with firm crossing wraps. Lock the wraps with a little Z-Ment.

With the eyes on top, the fly turns over and rides hook point up.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Run the thread back to the bend. Tie in a bunch of olive marabou for the tail and bind the butts along the shank.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Tie a bunch of ginger marabou on top of the shank at the same spot, so the light color forms the belly once the fly rides point up. Trim any excess.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Tie in a couple of strands of Lateral Scale at the base of the tail so they run back through the marabou.

  6. 6

    Step 6

At the base of the tail, tie in the 6X tippet and the chenille, leaving the tippet to hang out of the way.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Wind the chenille forward to the eyes in touching turns, tie it off and trim the excess.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Pick a hackle feather from the patch, strip the base and tie it in at the front of the chenille. Palmer it back through the chenille to the tail.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Catch the hackle tip at the tail with the tippet, then wind the tippet forward through the hackle to lock the stem down. Tie it off at the front and trim the tippet and the hackle tip.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Form a dubbing loop at the front of the body, load it with Simi Seal and spin it into a shaggy rope.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Wind the rope around and past the lead eyes, stroking the fibers back with each turn. Tie it off behind the hook eye.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Whip finish and trim the thread. Pick out or brush the head so it blends into the hackle.
