The Biot Soft Hackle is Cheech's take on a simple, sparse, classic style of fly. A barred turkey biot gives the body its segments, a pinch of fox squirrel fills the thorax, and a Brahma wing feather supplies a long hackle, though that feather takes some patience to wrap. It suits most approaches, whether swung, hung under a dry, fished as a nymph, or used on stillwater. Tied here on a size 12 hook.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Pull a biot from the stem and tie it in by its tip at the rear of the shank, with the wide end trailing behind the hook. Trim any excess.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Wrap the thread forward in a smooth layer to behind the eye, leaving the biot trailing behind.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Grip the biot with biot pliers and wrap it forward in touching turns to form a segmented body.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Tie off the biot in front of the body and trim the excess.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Dub a small pinch of fox squirrel onto the thread and wrap a short thorax in front of the body.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Select a Brahma wing feather and prepare it, stroking the fibers back from the stem.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Tie the feather in just behind the eye.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Wrap the feather with hackle pliers in a few sparse turns. Tie it off and trim the stem.
