How to Tie the Blowtorch

   Step 1

   Slide a slotted tungsten bead onto the jig hook and secure in the vise. Optionally add a few wraps of lead-free wire behind the bead for faster sink.

   Step 2

   Start fluorescent fire orange thread behind the bead and build a solid thread base wrapping down to the hook bend.

   Step 3

   Tie in a short, bright tag of Glo-Brite floss or Antron yarn at the bend, about half the hook shank in length.

   Step 4

   Tie in a length of tinsel or Flashabou for the rib at the base of the tag. Optionally tie in nylon mono for a counter-rib.

   Step 5

   Dub a slender body with black Peacock Ice Dub, building up to about two-thirds of the hook shank.

   Keep the body slim for quick sinking—essential for Euro nymphing in fast water.

   Step 6

   Spiral the tinsel rib forward over the dubbed body with 4-5 wraps. Optionally counter-wrap the mono rib for durability. Secure and trim.

7. 7

   Step 7

   Tie in a CDC feather by the tip and make 1-2 turns to create a sparse collar. Secure and trim.

   Step 8

   Add a few wraps of hot orange thread forward of the body as a collar/hotspot behind the bead.

   Step 9

   Whip finish behind the bead, trim thread, and optionally add a drop of Sally Hansen's Hard-As-Nails for durability.
