Bonefish Puff

Bonefish Puff

Saltwater
Bonefish & Flats
Beginner
Bonefish
Hook: 4-8

A small, soft-landing bonefish fly: a ball of chenille wrapped over bead chain eyes, with a sparse calf tail wing, a little flash and grizzly hackle tips riding over the hook point. It sinks quietly and rides point-up, and when stripped the chenille head kicks up a small puff of sand the way a fleeing shrimp or crab does. It shines on tailing fish in skinny water and is tied in pink, tan, orange or olive to suit the bottom.

How to Tie the Bonefish Puff

  1. 1

    Step 1

Start the thread a short way behind the hook eye and lay a thin base back to roughly a third of the shank.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Lash the bead chain eyes on top of the shank with tight figure-eight wraps, leaving a little bare shank between them and the hook eye for the chenille. A drop of glue stops them from spinning.

Medium bead chain is plenty. This is a skinny-water fly, so resist the urge to go heavier or bigger.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Turn the hook over so the point faces up. Just behind the eyes, tie in a sparse bunch of white calf tail that reaches a little past the bend and covers the point.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Lay three or four strands of pearl Krystal Flash over the calf tail and trim them to about the same length.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Tie a grizzly hackle tip along each side of the wing, about as long as the calf tail, with the curves facing out so they flare and move.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Tie in the chenille, make one turn ahead of the wing and one behind it so the wing stands up off the hook point, then crisscross it around the eyes until you have a full, round ball.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Tie the chenille off behind the hook eye, trim it, build a small neat thread head, whip finish and add a drop of cement.
