Bugle Buddy
Cheech worked up the Bugle Buddy as a simple carp fly after noticing two things many modern carp patterns share: barbell eyes and something sticking up from the back of the fly. Two strands of barred rubber legs stand off the rear, vinyl rib forms the body, and rabbit in a dubbing loop wraps around the bead chain eyes for the head. Eyes can be brass or bead chain in different sizes to suit the depth. He tested it mainly in two colors, and it leaves plenty of room for other mixes. Tied here on a size 2 hook.

How to Tie the Bugle Buddy
- 1
Step 1
Set the hook in the vise and start the thread near the hook eye. Build a short base where the eyes will sit.
- 2
Step 2
Tie the bead chain eyes on top of the shank close to the hook eye with crisscross wraps until they sit square.
- 3
Step 3
Add a drop of head cement to the wraps to lock the eyes in place.
- 4
Step 4
Run the thread back along the shank and a little way around the bend.
- 5
Step 5
Tie in two strands of Magnum Predator Legs at the back of the shank so they stick out and up behind the hook. Bind them down firmly.
- 6
Step 6
Tie in the vinyl rib behind the eyes and bind it along the shank to the base of the legs. Return the thread to just behind the eyes.
- 7
Step 7
Wrap the vinyl rib forward in close turns from the legs to the eyes. Tie it off behind the eyes and trim the excess.
- 8
Step 8
Cut the hair from a section of zonker strip and load it into a hair clamp.
- 9
Step 9
Form a dubbing loop behind the eyes, set the rabbit in the loop and spin it into a shaggy rope with a dubbing spinner.
- 10
Step 10
Wrap the rabbit rope around the shank behind the eyes, then around and past them to the hook eye, stroking the fibers back as you go. Tie it off and trim the excess.
- 11
Step 11
Whip finish behind the hook eye and trim the thread.
- 12
Step 12
Comb out any trapped rabbit fibers and check that the legs still stand off the back.
