Hook: 6

Cheech's carp fly, named for the long worm brown chenille tail hanging off the back of it. He built it to carry the hot spots and moving parts he likes in a carp fly: an orange UV tip on the tail, a lime and olive speckled chenille body, a mottled hen collar and a tan UV Ice Dub thorax. Cheech suggests rubbing the finished fly in some mud before fishing it. Tied here on a size 6 hook.

How to Tie the Butt Muncher

  1. 1

    Step 1

Start the thread behind the eye and build a small base where the eyes will sit, leaving some bare shank in front of it.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tie the eyes on top of the shank with firm figure-eight wraps.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Wrap the thread back along the shank in open turns to the start of the bend.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Cut a length of Ultra Chenille for the tail. Coat one end with orange Loon UV Colored Fly Finish and cure it to make the hot spot.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Lay the chenille along the shank with the hot spot pointing rearward and bind it down, so a long tail extends past the bend. Trim any excess at the front.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Tie in the speckled chenille at the base of the tail and bring the thread forward, stopping well short of the eyes.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Wrap the speckled chenille forward to the thread. Tie it off and trim the excess.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Prepare a Brahma hen saddle feather and tie it in just ahead of the body.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Wrap the feather as a collar, stroking the fibers back. Tie it off and trim the excess.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Dub the thread with UV tan Ice Dub and wrap it between the collar and the eyes and around the eyes.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Stroke the dubbing fibers back over the collar so they sweep along the body.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Bring the thread ahead of the eyes, whip-finish behind the hook eye and trim the thread.
