Carp Dough Boy

Hook: 6

Carp Dough Boy is a little carp fly from Cheech, kept compact like an edible nugget and tied on a stout hook that holds up to hard carp battles. Cohen's Carp Dub forms the body, with an Ice Dub head and pseudo eyes up front, and the fly also works as a mini crawfish. Use water based glue instead of super glue to keep it low in odor. It can be tied in a variety of colors to match the forage in your water. A speckled hen collar, fine micro legs and a rusty brown wing make a fuller version. Tied here on a size 6 hook.

How to Tie the Carp Dough Boy

  1. 1

    Step 1

Mount the hook in the vise and start the thread a little behind the hook eye.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tie the pseudo eyes on top of the shank with crossing wraps, leaving a little room behind the hook eye.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Wrap the thread back along the shank to the bend.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Tie in a clump of marabou at the bend for the tail. Bind the butts along the shank and trim any excess.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Tie in lengths of Magnum Predator Legs at the bend so they trail back on each side of the tail. Trim the forward ends.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Optional: add Grizzly Micro Legs at the bend with the Predator Legs.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Form a dubbing loop at the rear of the shank. Load it with Cohen's Carp Dub and spin it into a rope.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Wrap the dubbing rope forward, stroking the fibers back as you go. Stop short of the eyes, tie it off and trim.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Optional: tie a speckled hen saddle feather in front of the body, wrap it as a collar and stroke the fibers back. Tie it off and trim.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Turn the hook over in the vise so the point is up. Tie in a second clump of marabou on the hook point side, just in front of the body, so it sweeps back over the body. Trim the butts.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Dub the thread with Ice Dub and wrap it up to and around the eyes to form the head.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Whip finish behind the hook eye.

  13. 13

    Step 13

Add water based head cement to the thread wraps.

Water based glue keeps the fly low in odor, which is why super glue stays off this one.
