Cased Caddis
Cased Caddis is a quick jig hook tie from Cheech for trout streams, where caddis are an important part of the biomass. Anglers tend to pass over the cased stage, but fish do not. Since this fly gets bumped along a bottom full of snags, it is kept quick and simple. A custom blend of four dubbing colors forms the rough case, with a bright green thread band and black feelers at the bend. Tied here on a size 14 hook.

How to Tie the Cased Caddis
- 1
Step 1
Pull pinches of the black, rusty orange, olive and pepperbox dubbing into a coffee grinder. Pulse until the colors are mixed into one rough blend, and set it aside.
- 2
Step 2
Slide the slotted bead onto the hook and mount the hook in the vise.
- 3
Step 3
Start the green thread behind the bead and wrap a smooth base back to the bend. This thread stays visible at the back of the fly, so keep it neat.
- 4
Step 4
Pinch a small tuft of plain black dubbing on top of the shank at the bend and bind it down so the fibers trail past the bend for feelers.
- 5
Step 5
Trim the waste end of the tuft and tidy the wraps, then tease out any fibers that are trapped.
- 6
Step 6
Form a dubbing loop a little ahead of the feelers, leaving a band of bare green thread behind it.
- 7
Step 7
Bring the working thread forward to the bead.
- 8
Step 8
Load the blend into the loop and spin it into a shaggy rope.
- 9
Step 9
Wrap the rope forward to the bead to form the case. Tie it off behind the bead and trim the waste.
- 10
Step 10
Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.
- 11
Step 11
Trim the shaggy case to a tidy, slim shape, keeping the green band and black feelers clear.
