How to Tie the Cockroach

   Step 1

   Mount saltwater hook in vise. Start thread behind the eye and wrap a solid base to the bend.

   Use a strong hook designed for tarpon—they will test your tackle.

   Step 2

   Select 4-6 matched grizzly hackle feathers. Tie them in at the bend in pairs, curving outward. The tail should be 1.5-2x shank length.

   Match feathers for symmetry—curve them outward for a wider profile.

   Step 3

   Add 4-6 strands of Krystal Flash along the sides of the tail, slightly shorter than the hackle.

   Flash adds visibility in murky or low-light conditions.

   Step 4

   Tie in clumps of natural brown bucktail as a collar around the shank, building up a 360-degree surround.

   Add bucktail in multiple small clumps for even distribution.

   Step 5

   Trim the bucktail butts at an angle. Wrap thread over the butts to create a smooth, tapered head.

   A smooth underbody makes for a better-looking epoxy head.

   Step 6

   Apply flat tape eyes or 3D adhesive eyes to each side of the head.

   Position eyes evenly on both sides.

   Step 7

   Whip finish the thread. Apply 2-3 coats of UV clear epoxy over the head and eyes, rotating the fly to prevent dripping.

   Use a rotary dryer or rotate by hand until the epoxy sets evenly.
