Code Cracker
Code Cracker is a PMD nymph from Cheech, made as a far simpler answer to the full split case nymph. A thread body of dark mocha brown carries a Coq de Leon tail and a yellow foam wing case under thin UV resin. That bright spot is the point of the fly, since fish on the PMD hatch tend to key on a dark nymph with a bright mark on its back. Chartreuse, white or pink wing cases give them something different. Tied here on a size 16 hook.

How to Tie the Code Cracker
- 1
Step 1
Slide the black bead onto the jig hook and mount the hook in the vise.
- 2
Step 2
Start the thread behind the bead and take it back along the shank to the bend.
- 3
Step 3
Tie in a small bunch of Coq de Leon fibers at the bend for the tail. Bind the butts along the shank and trim any excess.
- 4
Step 4
Wrap the thread over the shank to build a smooth, slim body, ending just behind the bead.
- 5
Step 5
Cut a narrow strip of yellow foam from the sheet.
- 6
Step 6
Tie the strip on top of the shank right behind the bead, with the long end angled back over the body.
- 7
Step 7
Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.
- 8
Step 8
Touch a small drop of UV resin to the foam at the tie-in point.
- 9
Step 9
Trim the foam strip down to a short tab so only a small yellow spot remains behind the bead.
- 10
Step 10
Coat the wing case and the front of the body with thin UV resin, then cure it with a UV light.
Swap the yellow foam for chartreuse, white or pink to change the look of the hot spot.
