Coq N' Coyote

Coq N' Coyote

Wet Fly
Soft Hackle
Beginner
Rainbow Trout
Brown Trout
Hook: 12

Coq N' Coyote is a plain soft hackle from Cheech of Fly Fish Food, tied as a reminder that flies do not need to be complicated. Soft hackles have been around a long time and still catch fish, and this one uses natural materials: coyote mask dubbing for the body, dark brown pearl round ribbing, and a mottled gray Brahma hen saddle feather for the hackle. Cheech suggests swinging it for trout. Tied here on a size 12 hook.

How to Tie the Coq N' Coyote

  1. 1

    Step 1

Mount the hook in the vise, start the camel thread behind the eye and wrap back to the bend.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tie in the round ribbing at the bend.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Dub a thin strand of coyote mask fur and wrap it forward for a slim body, stopping short of the eye.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Wrap the ribbing forward over the dubbing in open turns. Tie it off and trim the excess.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Pick a Brahma hen saddle feather and stroke the fibers back toward the butt so the tip stands clear.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Tie the feather in by the tip at the front of the body.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Wrap the feather forward for a short, sparse hackle. Tie off the stem and trim it.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Sweep the fibers back and make a few thread wraps in front of them so the hackle leans toward the bend.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Whip finish behind the eye and cut the thread.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Add a small drop of UV resin to the thread head and cure it with a UV light.
