Crack-Back Aero PMD
Curtis Fry developed this PMD emerger from his Aero-Baetis style mayfly nymph after watching how the bright yellow body of the natural shows as the wing case starts to split. A touch of fluorescent yellow resin stands in for that crack. In his experience trout often focus on emerging PMDs, which is why he carries emergers and soft hackles for this hatch. Keep the body slim and the taper true to the natural. Tied here on a size 16 hook.

How to Tie the Crack-Back Aero PMD
- 1
Step 1
Slide the black tungsten bead onto the hook, start the dark brown thread behind it, and wrap a thin base back to the bend.
- 2
Step 2
Tie in a small bunch of brown partridge fibers at the bend for the tail and trim the butts.
- 3
Step 3
Tie in the brown wire at the bend so it trails behind the hook.
- 4
Step 4
Tie in the brown holographic tinsel at the same point, then bring the thread forward over the shank.
- 5
Step 5
Wrap the tinsel forward over the abdomen, keeping the body slim and evenly tapered. Tie it off and trim it.
- 6
Step 6
Wrap the wire forward in open turns over the tinsel. Tie it off and trim the excess.
- 7
Step 7
Coat the abdomen with a thin layer of clear UV resin and cure it.
- 8
Step 8
Tie in a strip of Thin Skin on top of the shank at the front of the abdomen so it trails back over the body.
- 9
Step 9
Dub the thread with the PMD brown dubbing and wrap a small thorax up to the bead.
- 10
Step 10
Lay a brown partridge feather over the thorax with its stem running out past the eye and its fibers along the sides for legs. Tie it down behind the bead and trim the stem.
- 11
Step 11
Pull the Thin Skin forward over the thorax and legs, tie it off behind the bead, and trim the excess.
- 12
Step 12
Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.
- 13
Step 13
Lay a wide band of the fluorescent yellow resin down the center of the wing case, leaving the dark edges showing, and cure it.
- 14
Step 14
Add a thin coat of clear UV resin over the wing case and cure it.
