Diamond Jig Leech is a quick stillwater jig leech tied by Cheech, who credits Lance Egan with suggesting both the dubbing color and the style of the fly. It uses only a slotted tungsten bead, a black marabou tail and a dubbing loop body of Arizona Diamond Dub in black red. Cheech mostly fishes it on a long leader with a midge tip line, and it has taken brook trout, splake, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and tiger trout across a range of trout fisheries. Tied here on a size 8 hook.

How to Tie the Diamond Jig Leech

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the slotted bead onto the jig hook, seat it behind the eye, and mount the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the thread behind the bead and wrap a thread base back to the bend. Trim the tag end.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Strip a bunch of black marabou from the stem and tie it in at the bend for a tail longer than the shank.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Bind the butts along the shank and trim any excess.

  5. 5

    Step 5

With the thread at the base of the tail, form a long dubbing loop and advance the thread to just behind the bead.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Pull pinches of Diamond Dub from the package and place them in the loop, spreading them along its length.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Spin the loop tight into a dubbing rope.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Wind the rope forward from the tail to just behind the bead, then tie it off and trim the excess.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Whip finish behind the bead and trim the thread.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Brush out the body so the fibers blend back into the tail.
