How to Tie the Dragonfly Nymph

   Step 1

   Optionally weight the hook with 6 wraps of .020 lead wire at the thorax area, leaving space behind the eye.

   Step 2

   Wrap thread from the hook eye backward, covering lead wraps and laying a smooth base down to the bend.

   Step 3

   Tie in a sparse clump of olive marabou at the hook bend for the tail, about shank length.

   Step 4

   Tie in another clump of olive marabou by the tips at the midpoint for the shellback.

   Step 5

   Attach 8 inches of copper wire near the bend and secure with thread.

   Prepare and tie in the tip of a grizzly dyed orange saddle hackle at the rear of the hook.

   Step 7

   Lightly dub olive seal fur or SLF up the hook shank, forming a slim, slightly tapered body.

   Spiral the hackle forward in 3-4 wraps, then counter-rib the copper wire to secure the hackle and add segmentation. Tie off.

   Counter-wrap the wire in the opposite direction of the hackle to lock it down.

   Pull the marabou shellback over the top of the body and secure just behind the head.

    Step 10

    Build a small, neat head with thread, whip finish, and apply head cement.
