Hook: 4

The Drunk Drea is a slim, single hook streamer from Cheech, made to fish on a double streamer rig. Its collar is a composite loop of barred marabou, Ripple Ice Dub and flash, a method Cheech credits to Jerry French and the OPST crew. The fly goes very slim on the strip and opens up on the pause, and the loop holds up well to toothy trout. This version is ginger, and olive and burnt orange, black and purple, and black and brown also work. Fish it on the strip or the swing. Tied here on a size 4 hook.

How to Tie the Drunk Drea

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the bead onto the hook and clamp the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the thread behind the bead and wrap back to the bend. Trim the tag end.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in a Gray/Barred Brown marabou feather at the bend so the tips form the tail.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Tie in a Tan/Barred Black marabou feather at the same point, then wrap the feathers forward along the shank like hackle. Tie them off and trim the excess.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Stroke and comb the marabou back so it lies in a slim shape over the tail.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Dub the remaining bare shank in front of the marabou with gold Ripple Ice Dub, stopping short of the bead to leave room for the collar.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Set up a long loop of thread off the fly with a D-loop tweezer, on a tying pad or similar flat surface, ready to take the collar material.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Cut the fibers from more of both marabou colors and lay them out together, keeping the tips and butts lined up.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Add the gold Ripple Ice Dub, the Mother of Pearl Ripple Ice Dub and a few strands of Polar Flash to the marabou. Comb the pile lightly so the materials blend.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Set the blended material into the thread loop and twist it tight to lock everything in. Comb out any trapped fibers.

A composite loop binds the fibers so firmly that the collar holds up to toothy trout.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Tie the finished loop in at the front of the body and wrap it forward toward the bead, stroking the fibers back with each turn. Tie off the loop and trim the excess.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Comb the collar back over the body and pick out any fibers caught under the wraps.

  13. 13

    Step 13

Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.
