Egan's Poacher
Lance Egan's Poacher is a hybrid jigged streamer-nymph designed as a fast-sinking point fly for Euro nymph rigs. The pine squirrel zonker strip provides lifelike swimming action, while the heavy tungsten bead and lead underbody get it down fast. It's equally effective trailed behind larger streamers or fished solo on tight-line rigs, imitating sculpins and leeches.

Materials
Hanak H 400 BL Jig Hook, size 8-12
Slotted tungsten bead, black nickel, 4-4.5mm
0.02-0.025 inch lead wire underbody
Danville Flat Waxed Nylon 140 denier, light olive
Pine Squirrel Zonker Strip, sculpin olive
Ripple Ice Dub or Ripple Ice Fiber, Mother of Pearl
Arizona Mega Simi Seal Dubbing, dirty olive
Whiting Bugger Hackle, grizzly dyed golden olive
How to Tie the Egan's Poacher

Step 1
Slide the slotted tungsten bead onto the jig hook and secure in the vise.

Step 2
Wrap lead wire behind the bead to add weight, then cover with thread wraps. Apply a drop of superglue.
Extra weight helps this pattern sink fast to the bottom where sculpins live.

Step 3
Measure and prepare a pine squirrel zonker strip. Tie in the strip at the bend so the fur extends rearward as the tail.

Step 4
Pull the zonker strip forward along the top of the hook and secure at the thorax area, creating a natural fur back and tail.

Add a pinch of Ripple Ice Fiber along the belly for subtle flash.

Dub a bulky head with Mega Simi Seal dubbing, leaving room behind the bead for the collar.

Step 7
Tie in the grizzly olive bugger hackle and make 2-3 wraps as a collar behind the bead for movement.

Step 8
Whip finish behind the bead and apply head cement. Brush out the dubbing head with a velcro brush for a fuller, buggier profile.
