Egan's Red Dart

Materials
Barbless jig hook, size 12-16 (e.g., Hanak H400BL or Firehole 516)
Slotted tungsten bead, pink or copper, 3.0-3.5mm
Red 8/0 or 70 Denier (Veevus or UTC)
Coq de León fibers, medium pardo, 4-6 strands
Hot pink or red UTC Ultra Wire, small
Natural hare's ear dubbing, gray-tan blend
Peacock ice dub or UV peacock dubbing
CDC feather, natural dun (optional soft hackle collar)
How to Tie the Egan's Red Dart

Step 1
Slide the slotted tungsten bead onto the jig hook and secure in the vise. Start red thread behind the bead.

Step 2
Wrap thread to the bend and tie in 4-6 Coq de León fibers for the tail, keeping it about one hook-gap long.

Step 3
Tie in a length of hot pink wire for the rib along the near side of the shank.

Step 4
Apply hare's ear dubbing to the thread and wrap a slightly tapered body forward to the thorax area (about 60% of the shank).
Keep the body slightly rough and buggy—don't over-smooth the dubbing.

Wrap the wire rib forward in evenly spaced turns, secure behind the thorax and trim.

Apply peacock ice dub to the thread and wrap a full thorax behind the bead, building a slight collar.

Optionally tie in a CDC feather and make one or two wraps as a soft hackle collar.

Whip finish behind the bead and trim. Apply a small drop of UV resin to the thread wraps if desired.
