El Sculpito Dos
El Sculpito Dos is Clark "Cheech" Pierce's follow-up to his original El Sculpito, reworked around materials that are easier to find, with a head of spun Mega Simi Seal. Barbell eyes turn the fly over so it rides point up, a rabbit strip supplies the tail movement, and silicone legs stand in for a sculpin's pectoral fins. Black marker bars finish the head. Fish it close to the bottom on a strip or a swing, in olive or tan. Tied here on a size 1 hook.

How to Tie the El Sculpito Dos
- 1
Step 1
Start the thread behind the hook eye and tie the barbell eyes on top of the shank, a short way back from the eye, with firm figure-eight wraps.
- 2
Step 2
Wrap the thread back to where the bend begins and form a dubbing loop there. Advance the working thread forward until it sits just behind the eyes.
- 3
Step 3
Spread a thin, even layer of Mega Simi Seal across the loop and spin it tight with a dubbing spinner.
- 4
Step 4
Wrap the dubbed loop forward along the shank and tie it off, stopping short of the eyes to leave room for the strip, fins and head. Trim the excess loop.
- 5
Step 5
Comb the body out so the fibers stand loose and sweep back, then flip the hook in the vise so the point rides up.
- 6
Step 6
Lay the rabbit strip over the hook point side of the body, fur side up with the hide against the dubbing, and tie it in at the front of the dubbing, with the rest of the strip running back past the bend. Trim the waste end.
- 7
Step 7
Tie a bunch of silicone legs against one side of the shank at the same spot, angled back for a pectoral fin. Repeat on the other side and trim the butts.
- 8
Step 8
Sweep the fins, strip and body fibers back and hold them out of the way with a soft clip or band, so the shank is clear from there to the eyes.
- 9
Step 9
Form a second dubbing loop at the front of the body and move the working thread ahead of the eyes. Load the loop with Mega Simi Seal and spin it tight.
- 10
Step 10
Wrap the dubbed loop forward to the eyes, then cross it around them to fill in the head. Tie it off ahead of the eyes, trim the excess and whip finish.
The wraps are tight between the eyes and can snap the thread. GSP holds up there, and a marker will tint it if you only have black or white.
- 11
Step 11
Comb out the head, remove the clip and let everything fall back into place. Trim any stray fibers around the head.
- 12
Step 12
Mark dark bars across the top of the head with the black marker.
