Lance Egan ties this small black jig streamer to fish on a Euro-nymphing rig, a method he picked up from Fly Fishing Team USA teammate Pat Weiss. Egan landed 15 fish on it in one session of the World Fly Fishing Championship, on the Sarca River in Italy. The fly has to sink fast and stay heavy enough to keep contact as you animate it through the drift, so carry a range of weights. It is a quick tie of marabou and chenille. Tied here on a size 10 hook.

How to Tie the Euro Jig Streamer

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the slotted tungsten bead up to the eye of the jig hook and clamp the hook in the vise.

Carry these in a range of bead weights so you can adapt to the river. The fly needs to sink quickly and stay in contact.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the thread behind the bead, trim the tag, and wrap back to the bend.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in a black marabou feather at the back of the shank so the tips run back past the bend as a tail.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Bind the marabou butts down along the shank and trim any excess.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Shorten the tail if needed by pinching off the marabou tips.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Wrap .015 lead wire on the shank between the tail and the bead, then secure it with thread.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Tie in the UV Polar Chenille at the base of the tail and bring the thread forward to the bead.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Wrap the chenille forward to the bead, stroking the fibers back with each turn.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Tie off the chenille behind the bead and trim the excess.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Whip finish behind the bead, cut the thread, and add head cement to the wraps.
