Falso Conejo Chironomid is a quick chironomid pupa tied by Curtis Fry. The name means fake rabbit, and the body is a holographic synthetic peacock quill standing in for a stripped natural quill. It works deep with a bigger bead, and its shine helps it near the surface too. An indicator rig, an intermediate line or a midge tip line will all present it. Use a Hanak 230 in sizes 12 and 14, or a Fulling Mill Heavyweight Champ in sizes 10 and 12. Tied here on a size 12 hook.

How to Tie the Falso Conejo Chironomid

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the bead onto the hook, mount the hook in the vise and push the bead back along the shank, out of the way.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the thread just behind the eye and tie in a piece of white floss on top of the hook for the breathers.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Trim the floss to a short tuft, whip finish and cut the thread.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Slide the bead forward against the breathers and restart the thread right behind it.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Peel one quill from the sheet, tie in its thin end behind the bead and bind it down along the shank to the bend.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Wrap the thread back up to just behind the bead in smooth turns.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Grip the quill with hackle pliers and wrap it forward in even turns so the dark edge forms the body segments. Tie it off, leaving room behind the bead for the thorax, and trim the excess.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Coat the quill with clear UV resin and cure it. Add a second thin coat if the body needs it.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Dub a small amount of Ice Dub onto the thread and wrap a thin thorax, leaving a few wraps of red thread showing right behind the bead.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.
