How to Tie the Fat Albert

   Step 1

   Start thread just behind the hook eye and lay a thread base down to the bend and back.

   Step 2

   Cut two strips of 2mm foam (tan for belly, brown for back), each about as wide as the hook gap and 3-4 inches long.

   Step 3

   Tie in the brown foam strip behind the eye, then secure it along the shank down to the bend. Stack and tie the tan strip on top.

   Use fewer but firmer thread wraps to avoid cutting through the foam.

   Step 4

   Fold the tan foam forward to create the first body segment. Tie down firmly. Repeat for two or three segments to form the abdomen and thorax.

   Pull the brown foam over the top of the segments and tie down to create the overbody shell back.

   Tie in white synthetic hi-vis wing material on top, extending toward the rear of the fly.

   Tie in barred rubber leg material on each side at the thorax, angled backward.

   Step 8

   Tie in a hi-vis foam or yarn indicator on top near the head for visibility.

   A bright orange or pink indicator helps track the fly in choppy water.

   Step 9

   Form a small head with thread wraps, whip finish, and apply head cement. Trim foam and legs to desired length.
