The Flugenzombie is Cheech's articulated mashup of three Fly Fish Food streamers. The twisted body and tail come from the Complex Twist Bugger, the marabou collar and silicone legs from the Cheech Leech, and the head from the Lunch Lady. It is not meant to copy any one creature. Cheech's view is that fish either love this style and want to eat it, or hate it and want to kill it. Speckled flash lies over each section, and marker bars on the head finish the color. Tied here on size 1 hooks.

How to Tie the Flugenzombie

  1. 1

    Step 1

Mount the rear hook and lay a thread base along the shank to the bend.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tie in a tan marabou feather at the bend for the tail, with the butts pointing forward over the hook eye.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Twist the marabou butts together with the thread and wind the rope up the shank to build a striped underbody. Tie off and trim the excess.

Letting the bobbin spin the thread and fibers together is the Complex Twist idea, and it gives a tough, segmented base.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Tie a bunch of heron gray marabou over the tan at the bend so the tail blends the two colors.

  5. 5

    Step 5

At the base of the tail, tie in a tan schlappen feather, a heron gray schlappen feather and a length of UV Polar Chenille.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Twist the feathers and chenille together into a loose rope and wind it forward to just behind the hook eye, stroking the fibers back with each turn. Tie off and trim.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Tie a few strands of speckled Flashabou over the top in front of the body, long enough to reach the end of the tail. Whip finish, brush the fibers back and take the section out of the vise.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Mount the front hook and start the thread. Tie the BallZeyes on the shank behind the hook eye with crossing wraps, leaving room for the head.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Tie the wire along the shank, slide on the bead, pass the wire through the eye of the rear hook and bring it back through the bead. Bind both legs down at the back of the front hook and trim the excess.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Repeat the marabou tail, twisted underbody and schlappen and chenille body on the front hook, stopping well behind the eyes.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Add a second bunch of speckled Flashabou over the top of this body, long enough to reach the end of the rear tail.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Wind marabou as a full collar in front of the body, stroking it back toward the tail. Tie in silicone legs on each side so they trail along the body.

  13. 13

    Step 13

For the head, tie a tuft of Alpha Wolf dubbing on top of the shank pointing forward over the hook eye, and a tuft of Cream on the underside. Fold each tuft back, tie it down and build the head in layers up to the eyes.

  14. 14

    Step 14

Whip finish in front of the eyes. Brush the head back into the collar, then bar the top with black marker and tint the belly with goldenrod and desert tan.
