How to Tie the Foam Popper

   Step 1

   Prepare the foam head: cut a cylinder of closed-cell foam to size and shape the face at a 45-degree angle or cup it slightly with a Dremel for better 'popping' action. Optionally paint or color before assembly.

   Step 2

   Secure the hook in the vise and lay a thread base from behind the eye to above the barb.

   Step 3

   Tie in a marabou plume at the hook bend for the tail, extending one to one-and-a-half hook lengths past the bend. Add 4-6 strands of flash for attraction.

   Strip fluffy base fibers from the marabou for a cleaner tie-in and better action in water.

   Step 4

   Add one or two saddle hackle feathers on each side of the tail, splaying outward for undulating movement.

   Step 5

   Apply super glue into the foam head slot, then slide the foam head onto the hook shank. Align with the body and hold firmly until set.

   Step 6

   Use a needle to pierce the foam for rubber legs. Thread legs through on each side and secure with a small drop of glue.

   Step 7

   Attach stick-on or molded eyes to the head with glue. Touch up paint or marker details as desired.

   Whip finish thread behind the foam head. Trim and apply a drop of head cement to secure.
