Garbage Sow Bug

Garbage Sow Bug

Nymph
Sow Bug
Intermediate
Rainbow Trout
Brown Trout
Hook: 16

Cheech ties this sow bug to look complicated while staying simple at the vise. Sow bugs never hatch. They stay in the river, swimming and drifting, and that keeps them on the menu for fish. The body is a custom blend of Adam's Gray Hareline Dubbin with tan, red and burnt orange STS Trilobal Dubbing. A stretched shell back goes over the top, and fine olive Nano Silk ribs it down. Tied here on a size 16 hook.

How to Tie the Garbage Sow Bug

  1. 1

    Step 1

Pull the Adam's Gray dubbing apart and put it in a small blender or coffee grinder.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tear the tan, red and burnt orange STS Trilobal Dubbing into small pieces and add them to the blender.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Run the blender until the colors are mixed, then pull the blend out and set it aside.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Cut a strip of clear plastic from a bag or material packet and stretch it between your fingers so one end narrows for tying in.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Mount the hook in the vise, start the thread, and wrap back to the bend.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Tie in the narrow end of the plastic strip at the bend and trim the tag.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Tie in the olive Nano Silk at the bend for the rib.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Dub the thread with the blend and wrap a full body forward, stopping short of the eye.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Pull the plastic strip forward over the top of the body, tie it down behind the eye, and trim the excess.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Spiral the Nano Silk forward over the shell back in even wraps to segment the body, then tie it off and trim.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Whip finish behind the eye and cut the thread.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Trim any stray dubbing fibers, leaving the ones along the sides for a buggy look.

  13. 13

    Step 13

If you like, add a thin coat of UV resin over the shell back and cure it with a UV light.
