How to Tie the General Practitioner

   Step 1

   Mount the hook and start fluorescent orange thread at the rear, establishing a smooth thread base to the bend.

   Step 2

   Attach gold oval tinsel and wrap a small tag near the bend. Secure and trim.

   Step 3

   Tie in a small bunch of orange bucktail extending about half to a full shank length beyond the bend. Add 3-4 strands of Crystal Flash and V-shaped golden pheasant tippet over the bucktail.

   Tie in oval gold tinsel for ribbing and an orange hackle feather by the tip at the tail base.

   Step 5

   For the rear third of the body, use orange floss. For the remaining two-thirds, build up with hot orange seal dubbing or synthetic substitute.

   Build the body with a slight taper, thicker toward the front, to create a realistic shrimp profile.

   Step 6

   Palmer the orange hackle forward through the dubbing body. Counter-wrap the gold tinsel ribbing through the hackle to protect it. Tie off behind the head.

   Step 7

   Select pairs of golden pheasant breast feathers. Tie in concave-to-convex so they sit over the top of the body like a shell. For larger flies, tie in pairs at one-third and two-thirds points along the body.

   Optionally add V-shaped golden pheasant tippet sections to imitate shrimp eyes.

   Form a neat head with thread, whip finish, and varnish for durability.
