Grease Top Sowbug

Grease Top Sowbug

Nymph
Sow Bug
Beginner
Rainbow Trout
Brown Trout
Hook: 16

Cheech ties this one as a very quick sow bug: count the resin and it is just two materials on the hook. A dubbing loop of Fulling Mill Ultra Dry Dub in Pepperbox is brushed out, trimmed to shape, and finished with a line of UV resin over the back. Hare's Ear is a good alternate, and any dubbing you like will work. Tie it with or without a bead. Tied here on a size 16 hook.

How to Tie the Grease Top Sowbug

  1. 1

    Step 1

Mount the hook in the vise, start the thread behind the eye, and wrap back around the start of the bend.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Form a dubbing loop at the rear of the hook and advance the thread up the shank.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Pull a thin mat of dubbing from the packet and spread it inside the loop.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Spin the loop into a shaggy rope of dubbing.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Wrap the rope forward along the shank, stroking the fibers back as you go, and tie it off behind the eye. Trim the excess.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Whip finish behind the eye and cut the thread.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Brush the body out so the fibers stand away from the hook.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Trim the fibers on top and underneath short with scissors to flatten the body, leaving longer fibers along the sides.

  9. 9

    Step 9

If you like, mark the back with a fine-tip dark marker.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Run a line of the UV resin along the top of the body and cure it with a UV light.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Trim any fibers that stick out past the eye.
