Grey Boy Buzzer

Grey Boy Buzzer

Stillwater
Buzzer
Intermediate
Cutthroat Trout
Hook: 14

A popular chironomid pupa imitating the naturals as they rise to the surface to hatch, here in one of the common color schemes: gray and white segments with black or red dividers. Curtis Fry ties it with white UNI Flexx over cranberry tinsel, though gray Flexx works too, adding orange wing buds, white McFlylon breathers and a UV coat. He fishes it under a strike indicator, hung anywhere from a foot to twelve feet or more down, changing the depth until he finds where fish are feeding. Tied here on a size 14 hook.

How to Tie the Grey Boy Buzzer

  1. 1

    Step 1

Mount the hook and start the black thread right behind the eye.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tie in a piece of white McFlylon on top of the shank just behind the eye for the breathers.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Trim the McFlylon to a short white tuft over the eye.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Wrap the thread back into the bend, laying a smooth black underbody.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Tie in the cranberry tinsel and the UNI Flexx at the back of the body and bring the thread forward to the thorax area.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Wrap the tinsel forward in open turns over the black thread. Tie it off at the thread and trim the excess.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Wrap the UNI Flexx forward over the tinsel, letting the black and cranberry show as thin lines between the white segments. Tie it off at the thorax and trim the excess.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Tie in a strip of orange Veevus tinsel at the thorax so one end trails back along each side of the fly.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Wrap the thread over the tie-in area to build up a black thorax, ending just behind the breathers.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Bring the orange strands forward, one along each side of the thorax, to form the wing buds. Tie them off behind the eye and trim the excess.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Whip finish behind the eye and cut the thread.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Coat the abdomen and thorax with Loon Fluorescing UV Clear Fly Finish and cure it under a UV light.

  13. 13

    Step 13

Turn the fly and coat any part of the body the first pass missed, then cure again.
