Hare's Ear Stonefly

Hare's Ear Stonefly

Brown Trout
Hook: 10-16

The Hare's Ear Stonefly is Clark "Cheech" Pierce's take on the classic Hare's Ear, rebuilt as a stonefly with every original material swapped out. Arizona Mega Synthetic dubbing replaces the hare's mask and gives a buggy look with some shine, speckled hen fibers form the tail and legs, and Thin Skin makes the wing case, with a strip of opal tinsel over the top. A copper tungsten bead and a wire underbody add weight. It is a quick tie, and Cheech carries them in sizes 10 to 16 in a range of colors. Tied here on a size 12 hook.

How to Tie the Hare's Ear Stonefly

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the copper bead onto the hook, seat it at the eye and mount the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Wrap a section of .015 wire around the shank directly behind the bead and push the wraps up against it.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Start the brown thread just behind the wire wraps and wrap back to the bend.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Pull a small bunch of speckled hen fibers from the feather and tie them in at the bend for a short tail. Trim the butts.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Tie in a length of amber wire at the bend, then tie in a strip of opal tinsel at the same point on top of the shank. Leave both trailing behind the hook.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Dub the thread with Arizona Mega Synthetic and wrap a tapered abdomen forward, stopping at the rear of the thorax area.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Pull the tinsel forward along the top of the abdomen and hold it in place. Wind the wire forward over it in open turns so the rib locks the tinsel down, then tie off both and trim.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Take the thread over the bare wire wraps toward the bead to cover them, then return to the front of the abdomen.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Tie in a strip of Thin Skin on top at the front of the abdomen, pointing rearward, and a second strip of opal tinsel on top of it.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Tie in a small bunch of hen fibers on each side at the thorax with the tips pointing forward past the bead.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Dub the thread again and wrap the thorax forward around the leg fibers to the bead, then sweep the legs back along the sides.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Pull the Thin Skin forward over the thorax, tie it down behind the bead and trim it.

  13. 13

    Step 13

Pull the tinsel forward over the Thin Skin, tie it down in the same place and trim. Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.

  14. 14

    Step 14

Coat the top of the wing case with a thin layer of UV resin using a bodkin, then cure it under a UV light.
