Hippie Stomper
Andrew Grillos's Hippie Stomper is a versatile foam attractor dry fly that doubles as a hopper, stonefly, or caddis imitation depending on the size and color. The dual-layer foam body with holographic underbody provides incredible flotation, while the grizzly hackle and rubber legs create lifelike movement. Featured in both Fly Fish Food and Tightline tutorials.

How to Tie the Hippie Stomper
- 1
Step 1
Place the hook in the vise and start the black thread, building a base to the bend.
- 2
Step 2
Select, clean, and stack moose body hair. Tie in a tail about one shank length long at the hook bend.
- 3
Step 3
Cut two foam strips to width: the black overbody and colored underbody. Tie both in at the rear of the hook, stacking black on top of color.
- 4
Step 4
Tie in a strip of holographic tinsel and wrap it forward to create a flashy underbody layer.
- 5
Step 5
Fold the foam layers forward to mid-shank and secure with tight thread wraps to form the first body segment.
For sizes 6-10, use 2mm black over 1mm color. For sizes 12-16, use 1mm for both layers.
- 6
Step 6
Tie in a tuft of white McFlylon on top as a wing post. Tie in the grizzly hackle feather at the wing base.
- 7
Step 7
Wrap the grizzly hackle 3-4 turns around the wing post, then tie down.
- 8
Step 8
Add Sili Legs on each side of the thorax area, adjusting length for proportion.
- 9
Step 9
Fold the foam forward over the hackle and legs to form the head, secure behind the eye with tight wraps.
- 10
Step 10
Whip finish, trim excess foam, and apply head cement to the thread wraps.
