How to Tie the Hot Spot Hare's Ear (Euro)

   Step 1

   Place the tungsten bead onto the jig hook and secure in the vise with the bead at the eye.

   Step 2

   Start fluorescent thread behind the bead and lay a solid thread base down toward the hook bend.

   Step 3

   Tie in 4-6 Coq de Leon fibers or hare guard hairs at the bend as a tail, about one hook gap in length.

   Tie in fine gold or copper wire at the tie-in point for ribbing.

   Step 5

   Dub a thin noodle of natural hare's ear dubbing. Build a slightly tapered body up to about 2/3 of the hook shank.

   Keep the body slim—overly bulky patterns are less effective in Euro nymphing.

   Step 6

   Wind the ribbing forward with evenly spaced wraps over the dubbed body. Tie off near the bead and trim.

   Optionally tie in a strip of turkey or Flashabou for a wingcase. Dub a spiky thorax of hare's ear dubbing behind the bead, and fold the wingcase forward over it.

   Step 8

   Build a fluorescent hot spot collar with bright thread or dubbing immediately behind the bead.

   Make the hot spot bright enough to stand out—this is the key trigger.

   Step 9

   Whip finish behind the bead and apply head cement. Optionally brush out the thorax for a leggy appearance.
