Hybrid Carp Fly
The Hybrid comes from John Montana, who fishes for carp on the Columbia River around Portland, Oregon, and it blends a San Juan Worm-style chenille tail, a buggy nymph body and a soft-hackle collar. That mix lets it pass for a worm, leech or larva, and bead chain eyes plus a little lead take it down quickly in front of feeding carp. It is one of the most widely fished carp flies and is tied in many tail and body colour combinations.

How to Tie the Hybrid Carp Fly
- 1
Step 1
Start the thread behind the hook eye and tie the bead chain eyes on top of the shank a short distance back, using tight figure-eight wraps.
- 2
Step 2
Add a few turns of .025 lead wire on the shank behind the eyes and cover it with thread so it cannot slide.
Leave out the lead for very shallow, calm water where the fly should drop slowly.
- 3
Step 3
Take the thread to the bend and tie in the red velvet chenille along the shank so that about one shank length extends past the bend as a worm-like tail.
- 4
Step 4
Trim the chenille tip to length and lightly taper it.
A quick pass with a lighter melts and tapers the cut end of the chenille and stops it fraying.
- 5
Step 5
Dub the thread with Cohen's Carp Dub and wrap a buggy body forward from the bend to just behind the eyes.
- 6
Step 6
Tie in a natural India hen back feather by its tip behind the eyes, take two or three turns while pulling the fibres back, then tie off and trim.
- 7
Step 7
Figure-eight the thread around the eyes, finish in front of them with a small head, whip finish and cement.
