Jelly Jig is a simple jig nymph from Cheech built around Semperfli Gel Core fritz, whose core is the same stuff used in gel spun thread and bulletproof vests, so the body is very tough. He started out trying to copy a pheasant tail body, and dark brown does that while a tan shade reads more like a hare's ear. The fritz comes in enough colors for almost any combination. The Ice Dub veil adds a little UV and works as a trigger for the fish. Tie it on size 16 or 18 hooks.

How to Tie the Jelly Jig

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the silver slotted bead onto the jig hook, seat it at the eye and mount the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the fluorescent orange thread behind the bead and wrap a base back to the bend.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in a small bunch of pardo Coq de Leon fibers at the bend for the tail. Bind the butts along the shank and trim any excess.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Tie in the gel core fritz at the base of the tail and bring the thread forward to just behind the bead.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Wrap the fritz forward up the shank to the thread for a pheasant tail style body.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Tie off the fritz and trim the excess.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Apply a loose pinch of UV brown Ice Dub to the thread and wrap it in at the front of the body so the fibers spray out around the fly as a veil.

Do not skip the veil. It is what gets the fish's attention on this fly.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Whip finish behind the bead, leaving a small band of orange thread showing, and trim the thread.
