How to Tie the JuJu Chironomid

   Step 1

   Slide the White 7/64 tungsten slotted bead onto the Ahrex FW531 hook and secure in the vise. Start the Semperfli Nano Silk 50D (White) behind the bead and wrap a smooth thread base to the bend.

   Step 2

   Select thin strands of Wapsi Supreme Hair in Red and Black. Tie them in at the bend of the hook, keeping them flat against the shank.

   The red and black combination creates the classic blood midge chironomid look.

   Step 3

   Wrap the Supreme Hair strands forward in tight, even turns to create a slim, segmented body. Stop about 1/3 of the shank behind the bead. Tie off and trim. Optionally counter-wrap Hareline Flat Tinsel (Medium) through the body for iridescent ribbing that mimics air bubbles on emerging pupae.

   Keep the body slim — chironomids are naturally very slender.

   Step 4

   Cut a small strip of Wapsi Thin Skin (Black) and tie it in at the thorax area, leaving it extending forward for the wing case.

   Switch to Veevus 16/0 (Black) thread if desired for a finer thorax build. Apply a small amount of Hareline Superfine Dubbing (Black) to the thread and dub a compact thorax behind the bead.

   Step 6

   Pull the Thin Skin forward over the thorax to form the wing case. Tie it down behind the bead and trim the excess. Whip finish behind the bead.

   Step 7

   Apply a thin coat of Solarez Thin UV resin over the entire body and wing case for a glossy, durable finish. Cure with a UV light.
