How to Tie the Kaufmann's Stone - Black

   Step 1

   Secure the hook and wrap a generous amount of lead wire along the shank. Build up extra lead in the thorax area for a wider, flattened profile. Start thread and cover the wire.

   Step 2

   Tie in two black goose biots at the hook bend, splayed outward for the tail.

   Step 3

   Tie in a strip of black D-Rib at the tail for ribbing material.

   Step 4

   Apply black dubbing and wrap a tapered abdomen forward to the midpoint of the shank.

   Make the dubbing shaggy and rough—do not create a smooth body. The scruffy fibers add lifelike movement.

   Step 5

   Wrap the D-Rib forward over the abdomen in even spirals. Tie off at the midpoint.

   Step 6

   Tie in the first wingcase section: a slip of mottled turkey tail over the top of the thorax.

   Step 7

   Dub the first third of the thorax, pull the turkey slip over it, and tie down. Repeat for the second and third wingcase segments, dubbing between each pull-over.

   After the final wingcase segment, tie in two black goose biots facing forward as antennae.

   Step 9

   Use a dubbing pick to aggressively tease out dubbing fibers on the underside of the thorax for legs. Whip finish and cement all wingcase segments.

   Coat each turkey wingcase segment with head cement or UV resin before pulling over for maximum durability.
