Kilo's Mangler
Kilo's Mangler is a jig nymph in the Hare's Ear style from Kilo (Josh), a guide on the local rivers in Utah who also manages the warehouse at Fly Fish Food. He came to it after fishing a size 20 Hare's Ear every day. A slotted tungsten bead on a jig hook, a squirrel dubbing body with a gold wire rib, a peacock thorax, a brown hen hackle and a shell pink hot spot make up the fly. Tied here on a size 14 hook.

How to Tie the Kilo's Mangler
- 1
Step 1
Slide the slotted bead onto the hook, seat it at the eye and mount the hook in the vise.
- 2
Step 2
Start the thread behind the bead and wrap back to the bend.
- 3
Step 3
Tie in a few speckled brown hen fibers at the bend for a long, thin tail.
- 4
Step 4
Tie in the gold wire at the same point and let it hang behind the hook.
- 5
Step 5
Dub the thread with the natural gray squirrel and wrap a body forward, leaving a short band of orange thread bare at the rear. Stop short of the bead to leave room for the thorax, hackle and hot spot.
- 6
Step 6
Wrap the wire forward over the body in open turns for the rib. Tie it off and trim the excess.
- 7
Step 7
Tie in peacock fibers from the eye stick, wrap a small thorax, tie them off and trim the excess.
- 8
Step 8
Tie in the brown hen feather in front of the thorax and wrap it as a soft hackle. Tie it off and trim the tip.
- 9
Step 9
Dub the thread lightly with the shell pink Ice Dub and wrap a small hot spot right behind the bead, leaving a narrow band of orange thread showing against the bead.
- 10
Step 10
Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.
