Bluegill

Hook: 10

Cheech came up with this bluegill fly on a spawning season trip when the fish turned fussy after a day of eating anything. A simple fly with a flowing tail and orange rubber legs saved that day, and he later reworked it into La Bomba. It has a barred chartreuse tail, a chenille body, a resin coated holographic wing case and fire orange legs behind a tungsten bead. It is easy to tie, moves well and holds up, and it is meant for bluegill, crappie and sunfish. Tied here on a size 10 hook.

How to Tie the La Bomba

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the tungsten bead onto the hook and set the hook in the vise. Wrap the round wire around the shank behind the bead, trim the ends and push the wraps up against the bead.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the thread behind the wire and build a few wraps to lock the wire in place. Run the thread back over the bare shank to the bend.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in a loose bunch of Senyo Laser Yarn Dubbing at the bend for a flowing tail at least as long as the shank. Bind the butts down and trim any excess.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Pinch the tail fibers together and draw dark bars across them with the black marker. Let the fibers flare back out when you release them.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Tie in the chenille at the base of the tail and advance the thread to the back of the wire wraps.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Wrap the chenille forward over the rear of the hook to the back of the wire. Tie it off and trim the excess.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Tie in a length of holographic tinsel at the front of the chenille body, with the long end lying back over the tail. It will become the wing case.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Dub the thread with Senyo Laser Yarn Dubbing and wrap a thick thorax over the wire, right up to the bead.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Tie in a strand of orange rubber leg along each side of the thorax, just behind the bead, so one end points forward and the other trails back. Dub a little more over the leg wraps.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Pull the tinsel forward over the top of the thorax, between the legs. Tie it off behind the bead and trim the excess.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Whip-finish behind the bead and trim the thread.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Coat the wing case with a thin layer of UV resin and cure it.

  13. 13

    Step 13

Darken the wing case with the black marker, then add a second thin coat of resin and cure it.

  14. 14

    Step 14

Trim the rubber legs to length.
