Latex Beadhead Stonefly

Latex Beadhead Stonefly

Rainbow Trout
Brown Trout
Hook: 12

A simple stonefly nymph from Cheech, built around one strip of Kiley's Exo Skin that forms both the segmented body and the wing case. Seine samples from Utah tailwaters showed him an abundance of stoneflies and larger caddis, which pushed him to carry more flies like this one. A gold tungsten bead sits up front, and tan Daddy Long Legs supply the tail and legs. It suits smaller stoneflies such as Skwalas, and the same style can be tied much larger. Tied here on a size 12 hook.

How to Tie the Latex Beadhead Stonefly

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the slotted tungsten bead onto the hook and mount the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the thread behind the bead and wrap back to the bend.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in the tan Daddy Long Legs at the bend so the ends trail past the hook as a tail. Trim any excess.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Cut a narrow strip of Kiley's Exo Skin from the sheet and tie it in at the bend.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Advance the thread to the point where the thorax will start.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Wrap the strip forward to form a segmented body and tie it down at the thread, keeping the rest of the strip attached.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Fold the remaining strip back over the body and leave it there for the wing case.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Tie a length of Daddy Long Legs along each side of the thorax area for the legs.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Dub the thread with the ginger dubbing and fill the thorax around the legs, working up to the bead.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Pull the strip forward over the thorax, tie it down behind the bead, and trim the excess for the wing case.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Use a permanent marker to add color and detail to the fly.

  13. 13

    Step 13

    Trim the legs to length.

  14. 14
