Hook: 12

Lemon Lime Chironomid is a bright chironomid pupa from Curtis Fry, worked up after lime and chartreuse pupa kept appearing in his samples from many waters. The fly runs brighter than the naturals, with a chartreuse bead and UNI Flexx body over a red tinsel underbody, a pink Ice Dub thorax and white breathers. Even where no bugs match that color it can serve as a searching pattern. Trout feeding on pupa are the target. Tied here on a size 12 hook.

How to Tie the Lemon Lime Chironomid

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the bead onto the hook, mount the hook in the vise and push the bead back toward the bend.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the thread just behind the eye and tie in a small piece of white Para Post on top of the hook for the breathers.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Trim the Para Post to a short tuft, whip finish and cut the thread.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Slide the bead forward against the breathers and restart the thread right behind it.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Wrap a smooth thread base back toward the bend.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Tie in a length of chartreuse UNI Flexx near the bend and leave it hanging off the back of the hook.

  7. 7

    Step 7

If you are using the opal tinsel, tie it in here, wrap it as a first underbody layer and tie it off.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Tie in the red tinsel just ahead of the UNI Flexx, wrap a narrow band at the rear of the body, then tie it off and trim the excess.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Bring the thread forward to just behind the bead.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Wrap the UNI Flexx forward in tight turns so it forms rounded segments and lets the red show through at the rear. Tie it off with room left behind the bead for the thorax, and trim.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Coat the body with clear UV resin, turning the fly to reach the underside, and cure it.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Dub the thread lightly with pink Ice Dub and wrap a small thorax behind the bead.

  13. 13

    Step 13

Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.
