How to Tie the Libby's Skwala Stonefly

   Step 1

   Place the hook in the vise and start the thread. Build a smooth base from behind the eye to the bend.

   Step 2

   Tie in short pieces of black Life-Flex spandex as forked tails at the bend.

   Step 3

   Tie in the Dirty Bug Yarn at the bend and wrap it forward to form a segmented, realistic stonefly body, leaving room for the thorax.

   Don't overdress the body — the natural Skwala has a slim, olive-gray profile.

   Step 4

   At the thorax area, tie in spandex legs on each side angling rearward.

   Step 5

   Select and clean a small bundle of elk mane hair. Tie it in as a flat underwing on top of the body.

   Step 6

   Prepare several CDC feathers. Fold and stack them atop the thorax, forming a bullet-shaped CDC wing/head that sits over the dubbing ball.

   Step 7

   Dub a small ball of Light Olive Ultra Dry Dub at the head to support the CDC wing and add buoyancy.

   Step 8

   Tie in a small tuft of orange Ultra Dry Yarn on top as a visibility indicator.

   Whip finish behind the eye and trim all excess materials. Apply no head cement — the CDC needs to remain natural and water-repellent.
