The Fly Fiend's simple yet deadly midge pattern using a colored thread or tinsel underbody visible through a clear segmented overbody. The transparent Stretch Magic or V-Rib creates a realistic segmented appearance while the peacock herl thorax adds a flash trigger.

Materials
Firehole 315 or TMC 2488 curved hook, sizes 12-20
Clear, pearl, or silver-lined glass bead (optional)
Chartreuse 6/0 (70D)
UNI-Holo chartreuse tinsel or colored tying thread
Stretch Magic bead cord or clear small V-Rib
Peacock herl (2-3 strands)
How to Tie the Magic Midge

Step 1
Optionally slide a small glass bead onto the hook. Secure hook in the vise.

Step 2
Start chartreuse thread and build a smooth base from behind the bead or eye down to the bend.

Step 3
Tie in a piece of holo chartreuse tinsel and wrap it along the shank as a smooth, bright underbody.
The underbody color shows through the clear overbody — vary thread/tinsel colors for different midge species.

Step 4
Tie in a length of Stretch Magic cord or clear V-Rib at the bend.

Step 5
Wrap the Stretch Magic or V-Rib forward over the underbody in touching turns to create the segmented transparent body. Tie off behind the bead/eye.

Step 6
Tie in 2-3 strands of peacock herl behind the bead. Wrap to form a small, flashy thorax. Tie off.

Step 7
Whip finish and apply head cement if desired.
