May ICU is a mayfly nymph designed by Norman Maktima, an Umpqua signature tyer with more than twenty years of guiding and years on Team USA. It is a quick tie with a slim body, pearl tinsel cheeks and a CDC collar that help it stand out to trout. This brown version has a wood duck thread body with a dark brown rib, a rusty brown squirrel thorax and a small fluorescent orange hot spot behind the copper bead. Tied here on a size 14 hook.

How to Tie the May ICU Brown

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the copper slotted bead onto the jig hook, seat it at the eye and mount the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the wood duck thread behind the bead and wrap a base back to the bend.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in a small bunch of pardo Coq de Leon fibers at the bend for the tail. Bind the butts along the shank and trim any excess.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Wrap a smooth, slender thread body along the shank and finish with the thread hanging at the bend.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Color a length of the hanging thread with the dark brown marker.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Wrap the darkened thread forward over the body in open turns to form the rib, stopping a little way behind the bead to leave room for the thorax.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Tie in a strand of pearl tinsel on each side of the shank at the front of the rib, with both strands trailing back past the bend.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Dub the thread with rusty brown squirrel dubbing and build a short thorax up toward the bead.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Form a dubbing loop at the front of the thorax. Gather the CDC fibers in a clip, trim them to length and set them in the loop.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Spin the loop into a rope and wrap it as a collar, stroking the fibers back with each turn. Tie it off and trim the excess.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Pull one tinsel strand forward along each side of the thorax for the cheeks. Tie them off in front of the collar and trim the excess.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Tie off the wood duck thread behind the bead and trim it.

  13. 13

    Step 13

Start the fluorescent orange thread right behind the bead and wrap a small band for the hot spot.

  14. 14

    Step 14

Whip finish the orange thread and trim it.
