The Micro Rambo is a small beadhead nymph from the Fulling Mill catalog, a good match for waters with plenty of small mayflies and midges. A coq de leon tail, a slim thread body, an open copper wire rib and a fox squirrel thorax are all it takes. It does the same job as a Pheasant Tail with fewer steps at the vise, and it suits Euro rigs, dry dropper setups, and other nymphing methods. It can be tied quickly in many sizes and colors. Tied here on a size 18 hook.

How to Tie the Micro Rambo

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the bead onto the hook and mount the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the thread behind the bead and trim the tag. Wrap back along the shank to the start of the bend.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in a small bunch of coq de leon fibers at the bend for a tail. Bind the butts along the shank and trim any excess.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Tie in the copper wire at the base of the tail and let it hang behind the hook.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Wrap the thread forward in smooth, even turns to form a slim body, stopping just short of the bead.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Spiral the wire forward in open turns over the thread body. Tie it off behind the thorax area and trim the excess.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Dub a small amount of fox squirrel onto the thread and wrap a short, buggy thorax up to the bead.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Whip finish behind the bead and trim the thread.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Add a small touch of head cement to the thread wraps behind the bead.
