Cheech of Fly Fish Food updated his original Mohawk Sculpin with Kiley's Fish Finz, which give the fly realistic pectoral fins behind a Fish-Skull helmet. A rabbit strip runs over the top of the fly like a mohawk, pinned by the hook point and tied off at the eye, and trails behind as a tail. The helmet adds weight and a wide sculpin head, and the fly is tied to ride hook point up. Fish it low in the water with strips and pauses. Tied here on a size 1 hook.

How to Tie the Mohawk Sculpin 2.0

  1. 1

    Step 1

Start the thread on the shank and lay a base back to the bend.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Form a dubbing loop at the bend, load it with Diamond Dub and spin it tight. Wrap it forward over the rear part of the shank and tie it off.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Pick the dubbing out, then turn the hook over in the vise so the point rides up. Work from this position for the rest of the fly.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Tie a fish fin onto each side of the shank just in front of the dubbing, so the fins angle out and back. Trim the excess.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Form a second dubbing loop in front of the fins, load it with Diamond Dub and spin it. Wrap it forward and tie it off behind the eye, leaving room for the helmet. Whip finish and cut the thread.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Pick out the dubbing around the fins so it blends together.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Coat the thread base at the front of the fly with Z-Ment, slide the helmet over the eye and seat it against the dubbing.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Cut a length of rabbit strip long enough to reach the eye and still leave a tail. Push the hook point through the hide so the strip sits on top of the bend.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Run a line of Z-Ment along the top of the helmet, then stretch the strip forward over the body and helmet and press it down into the cement.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Restart the thread in front of the helmet, tie the strip down at the eye and trim the excess hide.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Whip finish behind the eye and add a drop of Z-Ment to the wraps. Stroke the rabbit fur up to finish the mohawk.
