Murdich Minnow
Bill Murdich created this minnow for striped bass, and it has since become a staple for smallmouth and anything else that eats baitfish. A bucktail and flash tail with EP Fiber side skirts sits behind a wrapped Estaz body that forms a full, rounded head, finished with a marker-darkened back and stick-on eyes. Because it is almost all synthetic it sheds water, casts easily and swims just under the surface on a steady or erratic strip.

How to Tie the Murdich Minnow
- 1
Step 1
Start the thread behind the eye and wrap a base back to the hook bend.
- 2
Step 2
Tie in a sparse bunch of white bucktail at the bend so it extends about one shank length behind the hook. Trim the forward-facing butts.
- 3
Step 3
Tie about a dozen strands of pearl Flashabou on top at their middle, then fold the front half back and bind it down so the flash runs a little longer than the bucktail.
- 4
Step 4
Repeat with a dozen strands of silver Flashabou, laid over the pearl.
- 5
Step 5
Tie a small clump of white EP Fibers on each side of the shank so they run alongside the tail, then clip the forward ends.
- 6
Step 6
Add one more bunch of silver Flashabou just in front of the skirts and trim it to match the length of the tail.
- 7
Step 7
Strip the fibres from the tip of the pearl Estaz, tie it in, and wrap it forward to the eye in snug, overlapping turns, layering back over the front of the body as needed to build a full, rounded head. Tie it off and whip finish.
Stroke the Estaz fibres back toward the tail between turns so they are not trapped under the next wrap.
- 8
Step 8
Colour the top of the body with the gray marker to give the fly a darker back.
- 9
Step 9
Glue a Living Eye to each side of the head with a small drop of super glue.
