Hook: 18

Nano Rib Midge, tied here by Cheech, is an easy midge that stays extremely thin on very small hooks, which suits tailwaters and other water where a slender fly is needed. Ultra fine thread ribbed over stretched Life-Flex forms the segmented body, with a glass bead at the head and a touch of dubbing behind it. The same body technique can be adapted to many other flies. Tied here on a size 18 hook.

How to Tie the Nano Rib Midge

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the glass bead onto the hook, seat it at the eye, and mount the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the thread right behind the bead and trim the tag.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in a length of Life-Flex behind the bead and lay it back along the top of the shank, past the bend. Stretch it and anchor the free end so it stays under tension.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Spiral the thread back over the stretched Life-Flex in open, even turns to the rear of the body, so the thread bands form the rib.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Whip finish at the rear of the body and cut the thread.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Cut the Life-Flex, leaving a very short tag at the rear, so it relaxes and swells between the thread bands. Restart the thread behind the bead.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Dub a small amount of SLF Prism Bug Dub onto the thread and wrap a small thorax up to the bead.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Whip finish behind the bead and trim the thread.
