Curtis Fry's signature chironomid pattern featuring iridescent mirage tinsel over a wire body that creates a stunning 'oil slick' effect. This buzzer is a deadly stillwater pattern for trout feeding on chironomid pupae, especially effective in clear or pressured waters year-round.

How to Tie the Oil Slick Buzzer

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the black tungsten bead onto the hook and secure in the vise. Start the black thread behind the bead and wrap a smooth base down to the bend.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tie in a short tuft of white Glo-Brite Floss at the bend to form the rear breathers. Trim to about 3mm length.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in the red wire ribbing at the bend, then tie in the mirage tinsel.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Wrap the mirage tinsel forward in slightly overlapping turns to create the iridescent body. Tie off behind the bead.

The opal mirage tinsel creates the signature oil-slick shimmer effect.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Counter-wrap the red wire forward as a rib over the tinsel body for segmentation and durability. Tie off and break the wire.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Tie in a second small tuft of white Glo-Brite Floss behind the bead for front breathers. Apply a small dot of fluorescent orange UV resin on each side of the thorax for wing buds. Cure with UV light.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Apply black UV resin over the thorax area as a wing case. Cure. Finish with a thin coat of clear UV resin over the entire body for a glossy, durable finish. Whip finish behind the bead.
