How to Tie the Olsen's UV Purple Blowtorch

  1. 1

    Step 1

Secure the Umpqua Perdijig 210BL in the vise. Start the UTC 70D purple thread and wrap a thread base to the bend.

The Perdijig is a barbless jig hook — ideal for competition-style euro nymphing.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tie in a short tag of #2 Glo Bright Floss in fluorescent pink at the bend to create the hot spot tail. Trim to a short stub.

The hot spot tail should be very short — just a small bright tag visible at the rear.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in a length of UTC Ultra Wire in silver, small, at the tail tie-in point.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Dub a tapered body with Hareline Ice Dub in purple, building from the tail forward to about two-thirds up the shank.

Keep the dubbing noodle tight for a slim, flashy body. The UV properties of the Ice Dub add extra visibility.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Wrap the silver wire ribbing forward in evenly spaced turns over the dubbed body. Tie off and trim.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Select one or two CDC feathers and tie them in as a sparse collar. Wrap one or two turns and tie off.

Keep the CDC collar very sparse — just enough to add movement and trap air bubbles.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Switch to or tie in UTC 70D in fluorescent pink and build a small hotspot collar behind the hook eye. Whip finish and trim.

The fluorescent pink hotspot at the head matches the tail tag and adds a triggering visual cue.
