Overachiever Midge
The Overachiever Midge takes the tiny style of the thread midge, Bling Midge and Yong Special and adds a little more realism with a stripped peacock quill body. Cheech ties it here with a short band of flash and a thin resin coat. Fulling Mill offers these quills in a wide range of shades, so the fly can be tied in almost any color. Cheech fishes it on a standard indicator rig with very light tippet, because lighter tippet sinks flies into the zone more quickly. Tied here on a size 20 hook.

How to Tie the Overachiever Midge
- 1
Step 1
Mount the hook in the vise. Start the thread behind the eye and wrap a thin, smooth base back to the bend.
- 2
Step 2
Tie in a stripped peacock quill at the bend and trim the excess.
- 3
Step 3
Wrap the thread forward to the front of the shank, keeping the underbody slim.
- 4
Step 4
Grip the quill in hackle pliers and wrap it forward in touching turns to form a banded body, stopping short of the eye to leave room for the flash and head.
- 5
Step 5
Tie off the quill and trim the excess.
- 6
Step 6
Tie in a strand of peacock Krystal Flash at the front of the body. Wrap it into a narrow band, tie it off and trim.
- 7
Step 7
Build a small, smooth thread head between the flash and the eye.
- 8
Step 8
Whip finish behind the eye and cut the thread.
- 9
Step 9
Brush a thin coat of resin over the body and head, removing any excess so the fly stays slim and the eye stays open.
- 10
Step 10
Cure the resin with a UV light.
